Overview:
Product Development Engineer supports product development, production quality, and engineering alignment by inspecting samples at factory sites, approving readiness for shipment, and assisting with mass production inspections. Monitors product consistency, identifies quality issues, and conducts competitive benchmarking to support product requirements. Reviews Product Specification Sheets (PSS) for alignment with engineering drawings, identifies risks or gaps, and assists with testing, validation, and performance verification.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the development of new products from concept through commercialization, ensuring alignment with product vision, user experience, and business objectives.
  • Evaluate prototypes, development samples, and pre-production units to ensure adherence to design intent, functionality, quality, and consumer expectations.
  • Travel to factory sites to review development samples, conduct product evaluations, and support design validation activities.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design and Product Management teams to refine product aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, materials, colors, finishes, and feature sets.
  • Review and approve product samples prior to shipment for executive reviews, customer presentations, and product line evaluations.
  • Conduct competitive product research, benchmarking, and market analysis to identify trends, innovations, and opportunities for product differentiation.
  • Define and document product requirements, key features, and consumer-focused design attributes.
  • Partner with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure product specifications align with design intent and production capabilities.
  • Review Product Specification Sheets (PSS), engineering drawings, and technical documentation for accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Identify design, manufacturing, quality, and usability risks throughout the product development process and recommend solutions.
  • Support the development and execution of product testing plans, validation protocols, and performance evaluations.
  • Assist with production readiness reviews and monitor product quality during pilot and mass production runs.
  • Evaluate materials, finishes, components, and construction methods to optimize product performance, cost, manufacturability, and customer experience.
  • Work closely with overseas factories and suppliers to communicate design requirements and resolve development issues.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in consumer product development, industrial design engineering, or product engineering.
  • Experience developing consumer products from concept through production.
  • Strong understanding of industrial design principles, user-centered design, ergonomics, materials, manufacturing processes, and product aesthetics.
  • Experience working directly with overseas factories and manufacturing partners.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience supporting prototype development, product testing, and validation activities.
  • Knowledge of materials, finishes, color development, and manufacturing techniques used in consumer products.
  • Strong problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional and international teams.
  • Ability to travel internationally as needed, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
  • Experience within outdoor living, outdoor heating, grilling, appliances, or consumer durable goods industries is preferred.
